It examines how digital technologies affect ideas, practice, and visions of the future in higher education and in the cultural heritage sector. I research topics including Responsible AI in education, education and learning futures, museum and gallery learning and engagement, surveillance cultures in education, the impact and pedagogy of open education, and student and teacher experiences of online distance learning.<\/p>\n<p style=\"-webkit-user-select: auto;\">Some areas of focus of\u00a0my work have been:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"-webkit-user-select: auto;\">\n<li style=\"-webkit-user-select: auto;\">using speculative methods to explore young people&#8217;s imaginaries of AI and education futures; enable data storytelling about surveillance; and develop scenarios for higher education and cultural heritage infrastructure;<\/li>\n<li style=\"-webkit-user-select: auto;\">re-imagining how museums and galleries understand visitor engagement;<\/li>\n<li>examining surveillance, trust and technology in education;<\/li>\n<li style=\"-webkit-user-select: auto;\">advancing speculative methods for researching digital education futures;<\/li>\n<li style=\"-webkit-user-select: auto;\">theorising the rejection of instrumentalist discourses in digital education, research and evaluation;<\/li>\n<li style=\"-webkit-user-select: auto;\">connecting theories of teacher identity to new educational spaces;<\/li>\n<li style=\"-webkit-user-select: auto;\">problematising a discourse of authenticity in online reflective practices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"-webkit-user-select: auto;\"><a style=\"-webkit-user-select: auto;\" name=\"projects\"><\/a>research projects, consultancy and knowledge exchange<\/h2>\n<p>CI, Towards embedding responsible AI in the school system: co- creation with young people. (PI, Dr S Bayne)<\/p>\n<p style=\"-webkit-user-select: auto;\">2005-06 \u2013 principal investigator, Principal\u2019s E-Learning Fund supported ERDEE project: E-portfolio Research and Development in Education at Edinburgh.<\/p>\n<hr style=\"-webkit-user-select: auto;\" noshade=\"noshade\" size=\"1\" \/>\n<h2 style=\"-webkit-user-select: auto;\"><a style=\"-webkit-user-select: auto;\" name=\"phd\"><\/a>PhD research<\/h2>\n<p style=\"-webkit-user-select: auto;\"><a style=\"-webkit-user-select: auto;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.era.lib.ed.ac.uk\/handle\/1842\/6321\"><strong style=\"-webkit-user-select: auto;\">Unmasking online reflective practices in higher education<\/strong><\/a>. 2011.<\/p>\n<p style=\"-webkit-user-select: auto;\">My thesis analysed qualitative interview\u00a0data to explore how students and teachers negotiate issues\u00a0of audience,\u00a0performance and authenticity in their high-stakes online reflective\u00a0practices, by which I mean online reflection (for example in blogs or e-portfolios) which is summatively assessed, or which serves a gatekeeping function in terms of entry or progression into a profession or professional body. I used the metaphor of the &#8220;mask&#8221; to examine key themes of\u00a0performance, trace, disguise, protection, discipline and transformation. My central argument was that the effects of both compulsory reflection, and writing online, destabilise and ultimately challenge the humanist ideals on which reflective practices are based: those of a \u2018true self\u2019 which can be revealed, understood, recorded, improved or liberated through the process of writing about thoughts and experiences.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>on this page: research projects, consultancy and knowledge exchange phd research My research is located at the intersections of digital culture, education and learning, and critical futures.
